Q. What exactly is the First Home Owner Grant or FHOG
A. It’s a government initiative to help people building their first home. It is not means tested & there is no tax due on the amount received.
Q. Is there a cut off limit?
A. The total value of the property, inclusive of house & land cannot exceed $750,000.00
Q. Are there any other benefits?
A. When a home buyer is eligible for the First Home Owner Grant, land purchased up to $300,000.00 is exempt from Stamp Duty & a reduced rate applies to land purchases between $300,000.00 & $400,000.00
Q. How do I know if I’m eligible for it?
A. Criteria:
• Each applicant must be minimum 18 years old
• Must be first home buyer as a person & not a company or trust
• At least one applicant must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• Have not previously owned a property in Australia
• The property will be the principal place of residence for at least 12 continuous months at construction completion
Q. On joint ownership when neither party has owned property before, can both apply for the grant?
A. No – a single grant is payable per property transaction & not per person.
